Door Step School Foundation

Who We Are

Door Step School Foundation is a Section 8 Company incorporated in 2018 with the objective to have an independent entity in Pune. DSSF has branched out from the Society for Door Step Schools (DSS), a registered non-profit, started in Mumbai in 1989 and expanded to Pune in 1993 with the aim to address illiteracy among children from marginalized sections of society.

Since inception, DSSF (erstwhile DSS, Pune) has impacted the lives of more than 1 million children through various Community and School Intervention Programs built for children from marginalized communities; reaching more than 70,000 children annually in Pune since last five years. DSSF aims to carry forward this legacy and create a positive impact in the lives of the underserved.

Throughout our evolution, our programs have consistently centered around the core objective of fostering the 3R’s – Reading, Writing and Arithmetic, empowering children to become lifelong learners. Our mission has been aligned to SDG 4, promoting inclusive education for all and resonates with the principles of NIPUN Bharat (National Initiative for Proficiency in Reading with Understanding) as per NEP 2020. The focus of this initiative is to ensure universal foundational literacy and numeracy in primary school by 2025, as the fundamental prerequisite for further educational advancements. With a steadfast commitment to these goals we continue to prepare 3 to 5 year old children for formal schooling while also strengthening the foundational literacy, numeracy and reading skills of 6 to 14 year olds ensuring that they reach age appropriate competency levels.

What We Do

Door Step School Foundation aims to take Lifelong Literacy and Learning to the children from migrant and less privileged communities though innovative and interactive programs

‘Parivartan’ Training center

Begin introduction from here – Our Training center -‘Parivartan’ has been enabling and facilitating change since 1999. It forms the backbone of our projects with the communities, schools and other institutions. We train, we refresh our knowledge, learn new ways of working and build our capacities to take education to every doorstep.

School-on-Wheels

Remote locations? Bumpy roads? No space for classes? Fret not, we will bring the classroom or let’s say drive the classroom to the community! Our signature project since 1999, a bus remodelled as a mobile classroom and library taking education to the doorstep of children from migrant communities staying in the most inaccessible places in and around the city.

Networking & Nurturing

Reach and share, learn and teach, collaborate-network to nurture the future! Started in 2018, Project Networking and Nurturing aims to network with non-profit organizations, child-care institutes, volunteer groups, and individuals who are working with children. We help them build their capacity in DSS methodologies to enable children towards Lifelong Literacy and Numeracy skills.

SUPANTH

Sustainable Upliftment and Training with Honour – Reduce gap between the heading and introduction.Project SUPANTH launched in 2020, is our recent initiative which is aligned with the National Skill Development Mission. It aims to increase awareness among school going children and youth from the marginalized communities, about the importance of vocational skill development and improve their access to training opportunities which can lead to employment.

Foundational Literacy and Numeracy

Foundational Literacy and basic numeracy have been the focus of DSS since inception. COVID-19 had a disastrous effect on the education of children specially from marginalized communities to an extent where more than 80% children suffered from loss of learning of at least one language or arithmetic ability. This is an effort on war footing to address this loss of learning.

Networking & Nurturing

Door Step School started Project Grow with Books in 1999 with the aim of developing the reading skills of children and enhancing their vocabulary. It was initially started in the primary section of 10 schools as part of the school time table and has now, after 10 years, grown to reach more than 44,000 children from 140 municipal schools in the Pune and Pimpri Chinchwad areas. The goal was to improve the reading skills of the children and generate a love for reading which would eventually develop into a love for learning.

Supanth

Community Learning Centers are set up in a slum community to cater to the children who live here. These centers primarily offer a quiet place to study, read books and finish homework; an environment otherwise not available to these children. These centers also offer computer classes, science experiment labs, a reading room and study classes to guide children in their studies. A library service is also available at these centers, where the children can come to the center and select books of their own choice.

Project Phoenix

The Covid-19 pandemic hit us and nothing remained the way it was. Each of us was directly affected by this. The most adverse impact was on young school-going children; the closure of schools led to complete loss of learning, especially for the underprivileged first-generation learners who are our focus group. Impact Indicator is attendance tracking. If a child has 80-85% attendance, he/she is able to achieve the desired learning levels in 120 days intervention.

All children deserve an education.

We can’t help everyone, but everyone can help someone

At Door Step School, we are trying to bridge this gap by bringing education to the “Doorstep” of these underprivileged children.
