Projects

In 2003-2004 we conducted a survey on several-hundred construction sites in Pune. More than 50 % of the children in the covered areas were out of school, and if this figure applies to all constructions sites in the city, well over 20,000 children are likely to be out of school. Hence, we decided to focus on construction site workers and their children as our main target group.
Initially, we focused on the Aundh area where many new buildings are taking shape. This year we have expanded further to cover sites in other areas of the city. We conducted a survey on Sinhgad road, Rhatni Wakad and Hinjwadi, covering a total of 79 sites. When surveying a site, our teachers first locate the different sites in an area, identifying the construction sites. Following that, contact is made with the project or site managers in order to convince them to allow us to conduct classes for the children. Permission is given in the most of cases but the process sometimes takes several months...

Balwadi (Kindergartens) - for children aged 3-6 to have fun learning so that they are more inclined and better equipped to go to school.

Non-Formal Education Classes - sadly some children cannot attend school because they have to work. These classes are for out-of-school children with a special focus on basic literacy skills, language and maths.

Study Classes - where children attending school are helped coping with schoolwork. A little guidance and a quiet place to study can make all the difference.

School-on-Wheels - we have 2 buses that serve as mobile classrooms. This enables us to reach difficult areas where even room for a class may not be available.

Libraries - in co-operation with school authorities, we organise book reading sessions. We run community libraries for low-income readers, and have reference library centers where kids can have access to books and magazines, see fun documentaries, pore over maps and even work on computers.

Computer Classes - we help older children become computer literate and to learn the basic applications and concepts.

Training Centre - We train teachers, supervisors and coordinators.

School Adoption Project (SAP) - (initiated in 1999 in Mumbai) The School Adoption Project is a form of direct intervention with the student body of a formal school to enhance the schooling experience.

Community Learning Center - An opportunity to indulge a child’s curiosity, to encourage learning in a manner our formal education system does not allow: that is the role visualized for the Community Learning Centre (CLC) that came into being in July 2005.

Bal Samuha (Youth Groups) - This group was initiated with the objective of keeping in touch with the youth of the community, who have had some past association with Door Step School.

My Book - the book helps in a variety of ways. It is a proof that the child has attended a school. It also has an age certificate and a very informative progress report.
