 With nearly 350 mm illiterate people India has the disgraceful distinction of having the largest number of illiterates in the world.
More than 25 mm primary school-age children are not in school. Two out of five first-grade students will not complete the primary cycles of 4 to 5 years.
Children from poorer families are at a greater disadvantage. The dropout rate for the poorest households is about 4 times that of the richest ones.
